United by Hope Unfolded: Episode Two

Hi y’all, and welcome back to our second behind-the-scenes blog post for United by Hope, our new year-long production series where each month I get to visit a different nonprofit, tour their facilities, interview someone involved, and share their impact with our community.

This month, we’re already switching things up!

Instead of focusing on one organization’s facility, Episode Two centers around the Affordable Housing development at Alice Court in Grand Prairie. It’s a collaborative effort between Dallas County, the City of Grand Prairie, the Grand Prairie Community Housing Development Organization, Housing Channel, Brickman Homes, and Hope4All.

all working together to build ten new affordable homes, with Hope4All responsible for three of them. So rather than touring an office, we toured our first completed home. And instead of sitting down with one spokesperson, I had the honor of interviewing two people who have poured themselves into this effort: Mr. Chris Brickman, our wonderful builder, and Dr. Taylor Bunn, the best boss ever (not biased at all, you guys), also known as the fearless leader behind many of the moving pieces.

From the moment I met Mr. Chris, I knew the interview was going to be something extraordinary. He radiates kindness. Within seconds, you feel welcomed... which is especially helpful when you’re trying to look confident while nonchalantly staring at the Notes app mid-question. What stood out most was how personally invested he is. He didn’t just discuss timelines or materials; he spoke as someone who has been hands-on from day one. Because he has. He is literally building these homes from the ground up. And when someone puts that level of work into something -blood, sweat, tears- it shows.

Dr. Bunn brought the broader vision into focus. She has carried the logistical weight of Hope4All’s three homes from the beginning. Certifications, funding structures, partnerships, applications; all the behind-the-scenes coordination most people never see. Watching her and Mr. Chris interact was one of my favorite parts of filming. There’s a clear respect between them and a shared understanding that this isn’t just another project. It matters.

And that became even clearer when we talked about who this initiative serves.

To qualify, applicants must live in Grand Prairie and earn 80% or less of the median income, adjusted by family size. What surprised me most was who that includes. Teachers. Postal workers. Retirees. Young families. People with steady jobs and strong work ethic who simply cannot keep up with today’s housing market. We received many applications, and it quickly became evident that the need is far greater than most people realize.

Then came the tour. And oh. My. Goodness.

There’s a common assumption that “affordable housing” means lower quality. Walking through this home challenges that immediately. The exterior is clean and modern. Step inside, and it feels warm and thoughtfully designed. Granite countertops. Beautiful finishes. A living room with a fireplace (which, fun fact from the tour, isn’t standard in the neighborhood, but Mr. Chris wanted these homes to feel custom.) Natural light fills the bedrooms. There’s ample storage, a two-car garage, and a layout that feels intentional rather than cramped. And then there’s the backyard. A large green lawn, a beautiful fence line, and a school sitting just next door. Standing there, it wasn’t hard to imagine a family building a life in that space. Kids playing outside, walking across the street to school, growing up somewhere that feels steady. The details don’t feel rushed; they feel cared for. You can see the effort in every room.

If you’re wondering how you can support efforts like this, there are meaningful ways to get involved. Donations directly help extend affordable housing opportunities and allow this work to continue. Volunteering opportunities are listed on our website, and our newsletter includes an “Events and Opportunities” section to help you stay connected. And simply spreading the word makes a difference. Awareness expands impact.

As we wrapped up filming, I felt incredibly grateful, not only for the interviews but for the chance to see firsthand what collaboration can accomplish. Thank you to Dr. Taylor Bunn and Mr. Chris Brickman for taking time out of your busy schedules to share your perspective and walk me through the heart of this work. It was an honor to learn from you.

This is only the second chapter of United by Hope, and I’m excited to continue bringing you along throughout the year! If you haven’t already, you can watch the video version of this visit on the Hope4All YouTube channel and then return here for the deeper dive.

Thank you for reading, thank you for supporting local nonprofits, and I look forward to next month’s adventure.

Stay tuned for the next episode of United by Hope!!
